Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has initiated investigations into the alleged assault of activist Joshua Chisa Mbele by the Malawi Police Service.
Mbele and other members of Action Against Impunity were arrested in Lilongwe on Friday, October 29 during demonstrations calling for President Lazarus Chakwera’s resignation for alleged failing to deliver on his campaign promises.
According to a press statement from MHRC executive director, Habiba Osman, the commission has met Mbele and the others who are being detained at Namitete Police Station in Lilongwe.
Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Sunday called for the immediate release of Chisa Mbele and the rest of the people that have been arrested.
DPP’s Administrative Secretary, Francis Mphepo, the party calls the arrests unlawful citing that the constitution of Malawi gives everyone the right to hold and take part in peaceful demonstrations, hence the need for president Chakwera to intervene on the matter.
