Authorities have disclosed plans to facilitate construction of modern markets across the country’s booming trading centers.
Speaking in Parliament, Minister of Local Government Blessings Chimsinga said government would like to see such markets being used to urbanize the trading centers.
He said: “This is a very important development because it shows that the volume of economic activities in the areas are improving.”
Chimsinga added government has already established a taskforce working on the secondary cities through construction of such markets.
“And when markets are properly functioning are a precursor for urbanisation which is a key river for development so for us as a Ministry, we are excited that’s why we are trying as much as possible to facilitate the construction of markets in booming trading centers,” said Chimsinga.
Mwanza Central lawmaker Nicholas Dausi also asked the Ministry to fast-track construction of modern markets in the district.
“I was finding out why is that the progress has stalled and also I did request for the rehabilitation of Mwanza – Chipatala Market and finally there were plans to construct a market at Kunenekude.
“Notwithstanding though the fact that Mwanza is a border district, and we also serve our colleagues in Mozambique as you might know that Tete and Blantyre are trade areas which were negotiated,” said Dausi.
