Consumer Association of Malawi (Cama) has expressed its gratitude towards the decision by government to open Admarc markets across the country saying this will help to relieve the economic hardship among many poor consumers.
In a statement which has been signed by its executive director John Kapito it has welcomed the decision saying the development is a blessing and timely for poor consumers.
“We are pleased with the reduction maize at this peak period when most consumers do not have adequate food and money,” reads part of the statement.
However, Cama has appealed to the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure vendors do not invade in the depots.
“We are appealing with the ministry of Agriculture to ensure that strict control measures are put in place to ensure that the markets are not invaded by unscrupulous vendors as this will destroy all the good intentions regarding the reopening of the markets,” says the statement.
The association has further asked the ministry to release enough stocks of maize while controlling the amounts to be purchased by individual consumers.
“We are hopeful that this timely action by the ministry of Agriculture will assist all consumers and at the same time we urge the ministry from making unilateral and unnecessary decisions that affects many Malawians.”
Government recently announced its plans to the public of opening ADMARC Depots across the country early December 2022.
