Leader of Opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa has demanded for the appearance of President Lazarus Chakwera before the National Assembly with a comprehensive report on the arrest of ACB director general Martha Chizuma before December 10 this year.
Earlier today, a group of civil society organisations held a press briefing in Lilongwe where they gave government three days to drop the charges against the ACB Chief Martha Chizuma and conduct an inquiry.
Woman Rights Activist Barbara Banda of NGO- Gender Coordination Network (NGO-GCN) described the arrest, alleged reports of humiliation and harassment of Chizuma by the police as retrogressive and ill-timed considering that the country is observing the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo told Parliament on Tuesday that Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Dr. Steven Kayuni had been suspended with immediate effect in relation to the arrest of Chizuma.
Mvalo repeatedly denied government’s knowledge on Chizuma’s arrest which the Malawi Police Service claims it followed a complaint by the DPP.
