Livelihood of smallholder farmers from Kapichira catchment in the area of Traditional Authority Kunthembwe in Blantyre district is expected to improve as they are engaging into agribusiness enterprises initiated by the World Bank-funded Malawi Watershed Services Improvement Project (MWASIP).
This has been revealed during a media tour which Mwasip organized in the area to appreciate the progress of the programs being undertaken under MWASIP by community members including Farmers Field Schools, land, trees and water management.
Tikondane Farmers Field School whose members are engaged in groundnuts farming has through MWASIP, benefited a matching grant of about K7.7 million and has been linked to an agro-dealer who will purchase all their produce.
Speaking to journalists after the visit, Agribusiness Officer for Blantyre District Council, Rhodric Mbiridzi, said the matching grants are aimed at sustaining the livelihood of the farmers while at the same time conserving the environment.
