Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources and Climate Change has recommended the immediate closure of area 38 dump site in Lilongwe which the committee describes as a breeding ground for cholera.
The recommendation follows a tour the committee made to Lilongwe flea market and the refuse site where it was discovered that sanitation levels are beyond par, and life threatening.
The committee’s chairperson Werani Chilenga said that they want the Ministry of Local Government to allocate funds in the 2023/2024 fiscal plan for the construction of additional toilets at the Lilongwe flea market and all other flea markets to minimise the threat of further spreading of cholera.
