Lilongwe Social Rehabilitation Centre which is home to street-connected children is facing financial challenges despite Parliament approving K28 million for the facility in the 2022-23 national budget.
Peter Magomero, the centre’s manager, said out of the K28 million, the Ministry of Finance has only released K5 million which is too little considering the challenges the facility is facing.
He said the centre which has over 40 children, has limited beds, is understaffed in some sections and the diet is usually poor.
Magomero disclosed this during a visit by the Parliamentary Committee on Social and Community Affairs to the facility.
The committee’s chairperson, Savel Kafwafwa, said the committee will engage Treasury on possibilities of disbursing the remaining funds to support the facilities activities.
Lilongwe Social Rehabilitation Centre is a government facility which is being co-managed by Youth Net and Counselling (YONECO) and the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare.
