A Roman Catholic Brother based at Chezi Parish in Dowa has died in a road accident after he attempted to hold on to a loose rope hanging from a trailer with the hope of being propelled forward.
Dowa police spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha identified the deceased as 26-year-old Burkinabe, Jean Frorence Toro.
M’bumpha said that on Monday afternoon, Amos Ephraim Mwambira was driving a truck loaded with 1500 bales of sugar from the direction of Salima heading towards Lilongwe.
He said upon reaching Chiponda Village, Mwambira saw Toro cycling in the same direction and overtook him. While this was happening, the cyclist grabbed a loose rope hanging from the trailer so the truck could pull him and easily ascend the slope they were on.
“In the process Toro lost balance and fell down on the tarmac, the bicycle was run over by the trailer tyres. He sustained injuries on the hips, severe bleeding and bruises on both legs,” M’bumpha said.
After being taken to Chezi Rehabilitation Hospital for treatment, Toro was referred to ABC Clinic and finally referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital where he died whilst receiving treatment.
