Government has come under fire for failing to identify alleged 44 former Rwandan Army Generals who are on the run from their native country and are believed to be seeking refugee in the country.
The development follows recent admission by Minister of Homeland Security Ken Zikhale Ng’oma, who told a news conference last week in Lilongwe that Malaŵi is hosting 53, 000 illegal migrants including the most wanted Rwandan generals.
Addressing journalists this morning in Lilongwe, the Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) executive director Sylvester Namiwa, has described the government’s remarks as reckless and uncalled for.
“In a serious country, such a revelation would have forced heads to roll, but here it is business as usual. Sad.
“Nonetheless, CDEDI believes that the Minister of Homeland Security owes the nation an explanation or two on the same,” said Namiwa.
He added that the revelation has not only stirred fear among the general public but also shown how vulnerable the country is because of its porous borders.
Said Namiwa: “CDEDI wishes to seek the intervention of President Lazarus Chakwera in taming Minister of Homeland Security and other officials to respect the rule of law and, at all cost, in dealing with the recampment refugees and asylum seekers, desist from making public utterances that may stir unnecessary panic and end up creating undesirable situations in the country.”
CDEDI has also condemned the recent detentions of refugees and asylum seekers without trial describing them as an apparent strange case handling that is bypassing the courts.
The vocal human rights organisation has also called upon authorities to let issues of migration to be handled by the Department of Immigration and Citizen Services as per its constitutional mandate.
