The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) for the development of a taxation and customs program.
MRA commissioner general, John Bizwick, said through the partnership, the two institutions will jointly develop the curriculum, provide training to qualifying candidates and also share training materials with a view to fully equip young Malawians in the field of taxation.
Bizwick said the development and delivery of a training program will culminate into the award of a Postgraduate Certificate in Taxation and Customs.
“In other words, this MOU is coming at an opportune time when the Government is working towards reducing donor dependence and instead advocating for mobilization of domestic revenue as envisaged in the Domestic Revenue Mobilization Strategy 2021 – 2026,” he said.
MUBAS vice chancellor, Associate Professor Nancy Chitela, said the program is not only targeting MRA staff but also open to agents dealing in taxation, all entrepreneurs and individuals willing to learn about taxation.
She added that MRA employs a lot of staff which has no experience in taxation and in other cases they are sent to outside countries for training but this program will address the matter by providing the training within.
The program is expected to roll out in 2024.
