Six family members were killed on Monday night when their Honda Freed Hatch-Back collided head-on with a Hino Lorry at Mbuna Area, along the Dedza-Lilongwe part of the M1 Road.
Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu said the victims are 47-year-old driver, Kefasi Pachi, Getrude Pachi, 65, Shukrani Pachi, 25, Estina Pachi, 22, Ayilepile Pachi, 17, and four-year-old Tony Kasamiro. The family hailed from Ngwaya Village, Traditional Authority Liwonde in Machinga District.
Chigalu said Kefasi was driving from the direction of Diamphwi, heading to Kamphata with five passengers on board.
“Upon arrival at the said area, he collided head-on with a G4S Security Company motor vehicle, Hino Lorry, registration number BT 10860 that was being driven by Dennis Chirambo, 43,” he said.
Chigalu added that following the incident Kefasi together with three females, and two males including a young boy, sustained severe head injuries.
“They were pronounced dead upon arrival at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH),” he said.
The driver of the G4S vehicle escaped with minor injuries.
Chigalu said the family was returning to Lilongwe from Machinga where they had gone to attend a chieftaincy installation ceremony.
