Government says the construction of M’mbelwa University is scheduled to be fully completed in 2027.
Minister responsible for education Madalitso Kambawuwa Wirima disclosed this in Mzimba when she toured the construction of the University which has been budgeted at K450 billion.
Once fully completed, Wirima said the institution of higher learning will enroll 10, 000 students.
“When it’s done when the project is done, it’s going to create 10,000 spaces where we can actually have 10,000 students, students studying at this university meaning we are going to have we are going to equip with knowledge with skills to those 10,000 young people of the country.
“Who can employ others who can soft employ, but who can also be absorbed in the in the systems that we have, where they can work in this country, but who can also compete with others outside the country,” she said.
The education minister added that the University will have its first intake next year in August.
Said Wirima: “We are going to actually progress in the way that we want, our plan is that we have the project to finish in 18 months, meaning by June 2025. The project should have been completed. So we can actually have the first intake of the students in August of 2025 August next year.”
DEC Construction projects manager Ellard Malonda said the Company is committed to completing the construction of the Hostels within set timeline based on availability of funds.
“We have already brought in the machines, and we are ready to go, we have already done the levelling on one side, and we will be doing the other one, the coming weeks, and then we will start doing the excavations for the foundations we are doing a 251 hostel as DEC and Paramount is also doing the other 251.
“That one is really sure you know when you’re doing a project funds are very paramount and the assurance, we have already received here that the government has got money to ensure that this project is fully funded.”
Formerly Mombela University, President Lazarus Chakwera renamed the institution to M’mbelwa after his predecessor Peter Mutharika laid a foundation stone on March 22, 2015.
