Youth Net and Counselling (YONECO) executive director MacBain Mkandawire has called on the government to increase funding for the fight against attacks and abuses on persons with albinism.
He made the call on in Zomba during a two-day community advocacy training under a European Union (EU) funded Ufulu Wanga project which is being implemented by YONECO, Standing Voice and Beyond Sun Care.
Mkandawire cited inadequate budgetary allocations to the department of disability in the ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare as one of the problems hampering efforts in promoting and protecting rights of persons with albinism.
He said the trained community advocates have a critical role in raising voices of local communities on issues concerning people with albinism and demand action from duty bearers.
Standing Voice executive director Bonface Massa expressed optimism that the trainings will restore the lost trust among people with albinism.
“We hope these trainings will ensure that people with albinism start trusting various stakeholders when they provide support and care,” Massa said.
