The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says all is set for public lecture slated for Friday, February 16, 2024, at Mzuzu University.
The oration, which will be delivered by MEC Chairman Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale, will focus on democracy, law reform and preparation for the 2025 general election as a topic.
In an interview, the commission’s director of media and public relations Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the lecture will assist in bridging the gap between the intellectuals and industry players.
Said Mwafulirwa: “The purpose of this public lecture is to bring a bridge between the academia and what is in practice in the industry, but at the same time to offer an opportunity for MEC to engage with the academia, but also opinion leaders from Mzuzu.
“We expect that from this presentation, we will have a platform whereby MEC can present and clarify some of the things that we do more especially in preparation for 2018 election, and also have a critique from the big brains that we will be presenting during this public lecture.”
Mwafulirwa added that participants during the address will also include electoral stakeholders and the public in general.
“So, this public lecture gives an opportunity for MEC to bring a justification to stakeholders over the decision that we made,” said Mwafulirwa.
Off recent, the Commission has made a number of issues, decisions, such as the use of a fresh voter registration of which, according to Mwafulirwa some of them have generated debate to say why fresh voter registration and not just build on the voters register that the Commission had in the past.
