President Lazarus Chakwera has called on African countries to put more efforts in addressing soil degradation which has been worsened by climate change.
Chakwera made the call during the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health (AFSH) Summit which is being held in Nairobi, Kenya.
Delegates at the summit concurred with the Malawi leader, saying that it requires proactive measures to enhance sustainable soil management on the continent.
Chakwera said that it is very important to not only focus on chemical fertilizer use, but also enhancing access to organic fertilizers to improve soil health and fertility.
The Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit aims at bringing together African Union member states and stakeholders to highlight the crucial role of fertilizer and soil health on the continent’s food systems transformation as well as agreeing on a 10-year AFSH action plan.
