MEC borrows gensets from Zambia

By Lauryn M’banga

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says it has borrowed 1,500 electricity generators from the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) for supplementary use during voter registration for next year’s general election.

The commissions Director of Media and Public Relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, said in a statement that the move will enable the electoral body to have backup power capacity during the voter registration exercise.

“The Commission is in the process of procuring 1,080 generators. However, due to logistical challenges, this consignment will not arrive in the country in time for the commencement of voter registration.”

“The borrowed generators from the ECZ are expected to arrive in the country on 8th September 2024 through Mchinji, and all electoral stakeholders will be informed upon their arrival,” reads part of the statement.
