Standing Voice bemoans discrimination against people with albinism

A human rights non-governmental organization, Standing Voice has expressed concern at the continuous discrimination against people with albinism in the country.

Standing Voice executive director Boniface Massah said people with albinism continue to face widespread name calling and verbal abuse thereby affecting their well-being.

“People with albinism are called names and this affects their participation in development projects in their areas. They are also called names when they try to choose a life partner.

He said there are also fears and misconceptions which affect unions between people with albinism and others.

“Other men are reluctant to marry a woman with albinism and likewise due to fears of being abused in the community,” said Massah at an awareness meeting conducted at Govala Trading Centre in Zomba.

Zomba police community policing coordinator Nyson Chibondo warned all perpetrators of attacks against people with albinism that they will face stiff punishments as provided by the law.
