Renowned education expert Dr Steve Sharra has expressed concern over the average pass rate in the just released 2024 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examination results.
This year’s MSCE results by the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) has registered a 54.79 percent pass rate, a minimal increase from last year’s 54.40 percent pass rate.
Speaking to YFM, Sharra observed that for the past 12 years the country has been unable to register a pass rate above 65 percent in MSCE, a situation he said is affecting the country’s education sector.
“The current pass rate is worrying. It means that a lot of young people are not passing their exam which means for many of them that’s the end of their education career,” he said.
Sharra called on the government to invest in secondary education to ensure provision of quality education.
“20 percent of secondary schools have computer laboratories, just 55 percent have got science laboratories, 49 percent have libraries and also inadequate textbooks is a big problem,” he said.
