Unsafe abortions on the rise in Zomba

Lives of young women and girls in Senior Chief Malemia of Zomba district are at risk due to lack of access to comprehensive abortion care.

Kettie Mikwala, Her Liberty Project Manager disclosed this in Zomba district during a media orientation meeting on a project they are conducting in Senior Chief Malemia in conjunction with Girls Activists Youth Organisation (GAYO).

Mikwala, disclosed that there is an alarming increase in unsafe abortion cases in the area, with statistics indicating that 73 cases were registered between January and June this year, up from 63 in the same period last year.

She said there is a need for mindset change in order to address the root causes of the malpractice, hence the need for journalists to report accurately on the issues in order to educate the masses.

The project which is called Enhancing Reproductive Health Outcomes for Women and Girls in Zomba district, is funded by Amplify Change from UK and will run from July 2024 to June 2025.
