Scorchers booted out from COSAFA Women’s Championship

Malawi women’s national football team, the Scorchers have been booted out from the 2024 Hollywood Bets COSAFA Women’s Championship following a 2-0 loss to Zambia on Thursday, October 31, 2024.

The semi-final match was played at Wolfson Stadium in South Africa. The Scorchers, who went to the tournament as defending champions, conceded the first goal in the 46th minute following a defensive mistake inside the goal area, allowing Chumba Libanji to score the opener.

A few moments later, Zambia doubled the lead when the Scorchers goal minder Mercy Sikelo hesitated to clear the ball into safety and was dispossessed of the ball by the oncoming Zambian striker, Friday Mukoma, to slot the ball into an empty net.

Despite the loss, Faith Chinzimu, Leticia Chinyamula and Asimenye Simwaka were a marvel to watch for the Scorchers.

This means that the Scorchers will play for a third-place play-off match with the losers of another semi-final match between South Africa and Mozambique.
