Youth Alive Mchinji calls for consolidation of public holidays

By Wongani Chabinga

Youth Alive Mchinji is advocating for the consolidation of national public holidays, citing the economic strain posed by the current 14 days.

In a statement signed by Executive Director Luciano Milala, the organization argues that the existing holiday schedule significantly hampers national productivity, especially at a time when the country is striving to address financial challenges.

“Every public holiday causes a nationwide halt in productivity, affecting businesses, government services, and other key sectors,” the statement reads.

The organization suggests merging and retiring certain holidays to align with practices in rich countries like South Africa and China.

For instance, it proposes combining John Chilembwe Day (15th January) and Martyrs’ Day (3rd March) into one day of commemoration, thus honoring the sacrifices made for Malawi’s freedom without the need for two separate holidays.

Additionally, Youth Alive Mchinji recommends retiring Kamuzu Day (14th May) in favour of alternative approaches.
