Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo has assured the Australian High Commissioner to Malawi, Ms. Minoli Perera, of the country’s unwavering commitment to abolish the death penalty.
Mvalo made the statement during a courtesy call at the Ministry’s headquarters in Lilongwe, where he welcomed Perera, who is based in Zimbabwe.
During the meeting, Mvalo outlined the progress made since the current government took office, particularly the efforts of the Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee in engaging citizens on the matter of abolishing the death penalty.
He also highlighted the work of the Public Affairs Committee (PAC), which has been actively lobbying for public input and raising awareness on the issue.
In response, High Commissioner Perera praised Malawi’s efforts toward ending the death penalty, acknowledging the positive steps taken by the government.
She also reiterated Australia’s readiness to support Malawi in its developmental goals, including assistance with the 2025 general elections and in upholding democratic values.
