The Minister of Gender, Community Development, and Social Welfare, Jean Sendeza, has called for collective efforts to ensure the safety and free participation of women in politics.
Sendeza made the remarks during a press briefing in Lilongwe organized by civil society organizations and cross-party women’s directorates on ending violence against women during elections.
In her remarks, Sendeza condemned acts of violence targeting women in politics, stating that such actions violate the country’s constitution and democratic principles.
She emphasized the importance of unity among women to combat election-related violence.
“Women need to work together during this campaign period, regardless of their political affiliation. They should be allowed to express themselves freely without any hindrance,” Sendeza stated.
She highlighted that coexistence is crucial in a democratic society, acknowledging the diversity of political affiliations while calling for mutual respect.
Sendeza urged political parties and all stakeholders to work in solidarity to address violence against women during elections.
She appealed for concerted efforts to protect and respect women’s rights and dignity within the political sphere.
