Twenty-three households in Nkhatabay district, who were severely affected by Tropical Storm Chido earlier this year, are now receiving much-needed support, thanks to a generous donation from the Ruarwe Disaster Relief Group.
The group, made up of well-wishers from both Malawi and South Africa, has contributed about K2 million to assist the affected families.
The households, located in the areas of Traditional Authority Boghoyo and Sub-Traditional Authority Mkondowe, had their roofs torn off and homes significantly damaged by the storm, leaving them destitute.
In response, the group launched an initiative to provide aid, offering K70,000 per household to help the families secure basic necessities as they begin to rebuild their lives.
Speaking to YFM after the handover ceremony, Denis Hoyi, the leader of the Ruarwe Disaster Relief Group, said they were deeply moved by the devastating news of the destruction in their village.
“It was only right for us to make a contribution and support our community in any way we could,” he said.
However, Hoyi emphasized the need for further support from local authorities and other well-wishers to help reach more people affected by the storm.
