President Lazarus Chakwera has called on the Malawi Police Service to swiftly investigate, identify, and arrest the perpetrators behind the attack on civil servants during peaceful demonstrations in Lilongwe on Wednesday.
In a statement issued by Presidential Press Secretary Anthony Kasunda, President Chakwera expressed deep dismay over the violent incident, emphasizing that the right to demonstrate is a fundamental pillar of democracy.
He stated that any attempt to suppress this right is unacceptable.
“Violence has no place in a civilized society,” Chakwera said, urging law enforcement agencies to ensure that Malawians can exercise their constitutional rights without fear.
He added, “Those who seek to use violence to intimidate or disrupt democratic processes must be held accountable.”
President Chakwera reiterated that Malawi is a peace-loving nation founded on the values of unity, dialogue, and coexistence.
He issued a stern warning to individuals using political participation as a guise to incite violence, stating that such actions will not be allowed to tarnish the country’s reputation.
Chakwera further assured the public that his administration remains committed to constructive engagement and will take all necessary measures to ensure accountability for the perpetrators.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when unidentified masked men armed with panga knives attacked civil servants protesting against a 20 percent salary hike.
The attack has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for justice.
