The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, George Chaponda, has called for an investigation into allegations that several names are missing from the voter’s roll.
Chaponda’s demand comes after reports suggested that nearly one million names are missing from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) register, including those of Commissioner Francis Kasaila and his wife.
Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Chaponda expressed concern over the issue, stressing the need for an urgent investigation and audit of the voter’s roll.
He further recommended that the Systematic machines should not be used in the electoral process until the matter is resolved.
In response, Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo dismissed the concerns as premature, stating that there is no cause for alarm as the claims are based on rumors.
Mvalo assured that the MEC remains committed to conducting a credible election, and that the inspection and verification of the voter’s roll would begin soon.
