The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has called on public officials to adopt human rights-based approaches in their service delivery.
Chancy Kalolokesya, Deputy Director for Civil and Political Rights at MHRC, made the appeal during a capacity-building workshop for Zomba District Council officials.
Speaking to YFM, Kalolokesya stressed that duty bearers must consistently integrate human rights principles into their work to ensure equitable and rights-respecting public services.
“It is imperative for duty bearers to adhere to these principles in their service delivery. Doing so not only respects but actively promotes the fundamental rights of all citizens,” he said.
Kalolokesya further highlighted the need for deliberate inclusion of human rights frameworks in council work plans and activity reports.
This, he noted, would enable officials to assess whether their initiatives align with national and international human rights standards.
The workshop was part of MHRC initiative, funded by the European Union under the Chilungamo Programme, to train district councils nationwide on integrating human rights into governance.
The program aims to strengthen accountability and foster a culture of rights-based public service across Malawi.
